Mullaitivu

Most Important town of Mullaitivu District, situated on the spit of land between the Indian Ocean and Nanthikadal Lagoon. Strategically located, it was the subject of heavy fighting between LTTE Terrorist and Sri Lankan government forces in 1996 and 2008-9.

Mullaitivu is on the narrow strip of land between the Nanthi Kadal and Indian Ocean to the east. In Tamil, `mullai` means `forest tract` bordered by water on two sides. Mullativu was captured by Sri Lanka army in January 2009.
